In Robert Frost "After Apple Picking" I felt like that apples where a metaphor for life.
Like he was tired from life he was hurting from it . When he describes the apples that he's dreaming of it like he remembering things in his life. The good times and the bad.He say "the sticking through a tree to the heavens" its like that was his ladder to heaven. He explains that he had too much of apple picking but maybe hes just tired of suffering through life anymore.
He also explains about a long sleep human sleep maybe that is his final sleep.
Yes, you're right to see the poem's imagery as metaphoric, not simply literal--though "life" is a bit too broad. See other blogs on this poem, in current and previous blogs--including comment on the blogs, of course--and study materials, for some more specific suggestions.
